The rich and varied geological structure of the province of Alicante in Spain favoured the upbringing of excellent ornamental stones whose beginning of exploitation dates back to more than 3 thousand years ago.

In the Roman and Arabian ages in Spain, the exploitation of stone gained a lot of artistic and economic importance. Nowadays there still exist clear evidences of the production of those ages, carefully guarded in museums and monuments.

The first written evidence of Bateig Stone, can be found in the novel of Benito Pérez Galdós, Fortunata y Jacinta, year 1887, page 435 (…) I HAVE TO GO TO THE CEMENTERY TO WATCH THE STONE TABLET (…) AND IT IS MADE OF STONE OF NOVELDA, MODEST AND AFFECTONATE TRIBUTE OF A FRIENDSHIP…

In the 80’s the stone of Novelda was named Bateig Stone.
